| Like
humans, your pet's aging process is natural and predictable. As your
pet ages, nutritional needs change and its diet should be adjusted
accordingly. Age related changes such as vision and hearing loss usually
cannot be prevented. However, many conditions related to age may be
prevented or successfully treated if diagnosed early. That is why
we feel a comprehensive program for your older pet's health care is
so important. Regular and complete veterinary check- up, vaccinations,
parasite control, dental care and client consultation are the best
insurance for a longer and healthier life for your pet. |

| Heartworm
Disease |
|
|
|
| In
the spring, mosquitoes are considered a mere nuisance to humans. To
dogs, they can represent disease and death. The following facts about
heartworm disease can help you and your dog enjoy the pleasures of
warm weather without the perils. |
|
|
Heartworm
disease is a deadly canine disease that threaten< more than 50 million
dogs in the U.S.
Among
the symptoms signaling the presence of heartworm disease are weakness,
fatigue, chronic cough, loss of appetite and weight. Unfortunately,
by the time your pet exhibits these symptoms, irreversible damage
may have already occurred.
Heartworm
disease is preventable. Visits to the veterinary for early testing
can protect your dog from the fatal effects of heartworm disease.
If your dog's heartworm test is negative, we can prescribe medication
given monthly to prevent the disease year-round. This medication
will protect the dog even if it is bitten by a disease- carrying
mosquito. Early detection is crucial in identifying and treating
the heartworms. Failure to treat heartworm disease may result in
heart failure and/or serious disease of the liver and kidneys.
|
|
|
The
disease is caused by a parasite known as Dirofilaria immitis, which
is transmitted by mosquitoes. It kills dogs by causing damage to
the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys.
Any
dog that spends time outside is at risk. Even indoor dogs can become
infected on daily walks or while playing in the yard. Dogs who travel
or vacation with their families are vulnerable, especially in those
areas of the country where heartworm bearing mosquitoes are especially
prevalent.
Heartworms
can be killed through a series of injections, or can be surgically
removed. Once the adult heartworms are eliminated, another medication
is administered to kill any microfilariae circulating in the bloodstream.

One dose,
once a month. It's that simple.
Flea
control is very important for the health and well being of your
pet. Fleabites cause discomfort and irritation and are responsible
for a skin condition known as 'flea allergy dermatitis'. Fleas can
carry tapeworms, a harmful intestinal parasite. Fleas can quickly
infest your home. Recent scientific discoveries have changed our
entire approach to flea control. The new, more advanced approach
is to attack fleas in their early stages of development. With such
products available we can safely, effectively, literally stop fleas
in their own tracks. Science has produced new products that attack
fleas as soon as they get on your pet. This revolutionary chemistry
causes the flea's nervous system to become impaired and the flea
dies. Perhaps more importantly, pets do not have to be bitten for
a flea to be killed. Our Doctors and Technicians will be happy to
discuss these products with you to assure you which is the safest
and most effective for your pet's situation.
Some products
also kill ticks and other parasites.
