Maggie
was born at the Orange Villa Veterinary Hospital in exam room 2
on March 13th, 1989. She was the oldest of eight in the litter,
but has never grown up. She still thinks that she is a little puppy.
Every morning when Dr. Dahlem leaves carrying his briefcase, she
runs out and sits at the car, knowing she is coming to work. If
there is no briefcase, she's not interested. One morning last summer,
she was having a difficult time getting home from her walk. Dr.
Dahlem knew this was not her normal bouncy self. He stopped to examine
her and discovered her heart rate was about thirty beats per minute
(normal being 100-130 bpm in the dog.) When they got to the hospital,
Dr. Dahlem ran an electrocardiogram (ECG) and an echocardiogram
and found out she had complete heart block. The only treatment for
that is a pacemaker. The following week, she went to the Southern
California Surgical Group, where Dr. Peter Vogel implanted a pacemaker.
Within a couple of days, she was back to her old self and hasn't
skipped a beat since.
